Mediterranean-Inspired Dishes on a Rooftop? – A Review of Skylight Toronto

Finding the right spot for a group lunch is always a struggle, especially when you’re trying to find somewhere everyone will enjoy. After scrolling through endless Instagram feeds one Saturday afternoon, we found Skylight. Their beautifully curated photos of food and drinks were tempting, but what really convinced us was the rooftop seating with views of the city. Decision made — we were headed to Skylight!

About Skylight

Located in the heart of Yorkville, Skylight is a rooftop restaurant and bar offering Mediterranean-inspired dishes. It’s not just about the food; Skylight boasts a chic indoor-outdoor experience with stunning views overlooking Bloor Street, making it a sophisticated spot to dine and unwind.

Ambience

Skylight's decor and atmosphere give off a modern, upscale vibe. The space offers plenty of seating without making it feel overcrowded or claustrophobic. One of my biggest pet peeves when dining out is feeling like I’m part of the conversation at the next table because of cramped seating — thankfully, that wasn’t an issue here. My favourite feature was the floor-to-ceiling windows, which bathed the space in natural light and provided a perfect view of the surrounding cityscape and bustling street below.

Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t on our side that day. It rained suddenly which left the outdoor seating wet, so we could only admire the rooftop from indoors, wishing we could experience the open-air seating.

By evening, the space transforms as the lighting dims, creating a more intimate, bar-like atmosphere — perfect for a night out with friends.

Food and Service

Skylight’s menu offers a variety of Mediterranean-inspired options, with categories like Small Plates, Raw Bar, Spreads, Salads, Mains, Grills, and Sides. While their drink selection is equally tempting, featuring cocktails and other beverages, I didn’t explore that side of the menu on this visit.

We opted for the Pistachio Crusted Kebabs, the 1/2 Harissa Giguere Chicken, and the Hummus with Chicken Shawarma. Each plate impressed us, but my personal favourite was the Pistachio Crusted Kebabs. Made from a mix of ground wagyu beef and lamb, the kebabs were coated in crushed pistachios and served with a side of creamy tzatziki. The meat was perfectly seasoned, tender, and bursting with flavour. The Harissa Giguere Chicken was equally delicious — well-cooked and flavourful. However, the fries that accompanied the chicken were a letdown for us. They had a strange, unfamiliar seasoning that didn’t quite hit the mark. On the other hand, the hummus in the shawarma dish was a delightful highlight, creamy and rich.

Spend

Here’s the breakdown of our meal costs:

  • Pistachio Crusted Kebabs — $36

  • 1/2 Harissa Giguere Chicken — $41

  • Hummus with Chicken Shawarma, Pine Nuts (small) — $16

Final thoughts

Skylight is an excellent choice for a date or a chic yet reasonably-priced lunch or dinner with friends. The ambience, service, and Mediterranean-inspired dishes make for an enjoyable experience. I would definitely revisit, especially since I have unfinished business with that rooftop!
